Leaving a Lasting Footprint: Community Trail Dedication Honors a Path Paved by Generosity

MADERA, Calif. – Valley Children’s is celebrating the dedication of the Donald E. Gumz Community Trail on the hospital’s main campus in Madera.

Born and raised in Fresno, Donald E. Gumz spent his life supporting causes that reflected his deep love for the Central Valley and its people. From children’s health to education and shelter, his philanthropy touched countless lives – including a $4 million estate gift to Valley Children’s in 2020 that made a significant impact on the expansion of outpatient services, allowing the organization to serve more children in the region.

“Mr. Gumz’s extraordinary gift reminds us that true generosity has the power to touch lives long after we are gone,” said Rob Saroyan, president of Valley Children’s Healthcare Foundation. “His love of the outdoors makes this a fitting tribute.”

The newly named trail honors the legacy of Mr. Gumz, providing a place where families can unwind, staff can reset and nature helps restore a sense of calm and control during uncertain times – especially for patients and their families navigating challenging medical journeys.

“Healing happens both inside and outside our hospital walls,” says Steffani Sanchez, employee wellness coordinator at Valley Children’s. “Even a short walk on the trail can lower stress, improve mood, and help people feel more grounded. It’s a simple but powerful way to support wellness across our campus.”

The scenic trail, approximately 1.5 miles long, winds through a preserved habitat. The entrance is located behind the Medical Office Building, on the east side of the Valley Children’s Hospital campus.
