Award Highlights Valley Children’s Commitment to Physician Well-Being

MADERA, Calif. – Valley Children’s Healthcare has been recognized as a Wellbeing First Champion by the Dr. Lorna Breen Foundation for the third consecutive year, a distinction that highlights the organization’s efforts to support physician mental health and reduce barriers to seeking care.

The recognition is awarded to healthcare organizations whose credentialing applications do not include stigmatizing questions about mental health conditions and that promote workplace cultures where seeking mental healthcare is supported and encouraged.

“Receiving this award for three consecutive years demonstrates Valley Children’s ongoing commitment to the health and well-being of our providers,” said Dr. Julieanna Sahouria, chief of staff and emergency medicine physician at Valley Children’s. “This annual recognition reflects a sustained organizational commitment and reinforces that taking care of our providers is an essential part of taking care of our patients.”

The award comes as healthcare organizations nationwide continue to address physician burnout, mental health challenges and suicide prevention.

“Seeking mental healthcare should never be viewed as a weakness,” said Lisa Watkins, physician wellness coordinator at Valley Children’s. “It’s part of sustaining a healthy workforce, a healthier healthcare system and the ability to provide high-quality, compassionate care.”

The recognition coincides with National Suicide Prevention Month, which aims to reduce stigma surrounding suicide and mental health and raise awareness of available support services.

The Dr. Lorna Breen Foundation was established in memory of Dr. Lorna Breen, an emergency physician who died by suicide in 2020. The organization advocates for eliminating stigma around mental health care and improving well-being among healthcare workers.
