MADERA, Calif. – Days after a tragic accident, the family of a young Porterville girl made the selfless decision to donate her organs – an act that will provide hope for people she never knew.
Isabella was struck by a vehicle in Porterville on Sunday, Feb. 1, according to her family.
On Thursday, Feb. 5 – Isabella’s 6th birthday – staff and physicians at Valley Children’s joined dozens of family members and friends to line the halls for an Honor Walk, a ceremony that celebrates organ donation.
During the procession, loved ones surrounded Isabella as staff escorted her through the halls, honoring her radiant life and the ultimate gift she will give to others.
At the end of the walk, Valley Children’s chaplains prayed over Isabella, and her family shared memories of her love for unicorns, mermaids and chocolate. Those gathered then joined together to sing “Happy Birthday” in English and Spanish.
According to Donor Network West, which is coordinating the donation, six to eight people are expected to receive lifesaving organ transplants because of Isabella’s donation. Up to 72 more will benefit from her tissue donation – ensuring Isabella’s legacy will live on.
