PHIL Award Honors Dedication, Commitment of Respiratory Therapists

MADERA, Calif. – Valley Children’s has recognized Respiratory Care Practitioner Chase Vance as the latest recipient of the PHIL Award, an honor given to respiratory therapists each quarter who show compassion, dedication and commitment to patient care.

After completing his shift at the Madera campus, Vance encountered a family facing an emergency. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, he immediately sprang into action, carrying an unresponsive child to the emergency department to ensure the patient received immediate, life-saving care.

His actions exemplify the professionalism, selflessness and quick thinking that respiratory therapists bring to their work every day, often in some of the most critical moments of a patient’s journey.

The PHIL Award, which stands for Pulmonary Health & Illnesses of the Lungs, is the only national, hospital-based recognition program dedicated to honoring respiratory therapists who demonstrate excellence in compassionate patient care.

Established in 2006 by the FACES (Family and Caregiver Education and Support) Foundation, the award commemorates Philip C. Lamka, who died from complications related to interstitial lung disease. The program was created to recognize the vital contributions respiratory therapists make to the care and recovery of patients, while highlighting the compassion and dedication they bring to families during challenging times.

At Valley Children’s, all respiratory therapists are eligible to receive the award, with nominations submitted by patients, families and staff members. The recognition serves not only to celebrate individual achievements but also to reinforce a culture of gratitude, teamwork and excellence throughout the organization.

Like nurses, physicians and other frontline caregivers, respiratory therapists play a critical role in patient care, often supporting children and families through some of their most vulnerable moments. The PHIL Award shines a spotlight on these healthcare professionals and the lasting impact they make every day through their skill, compassion and commitment to others.
