MADERA, Calif. – Pilots from the 144th Fighter Wing made a special landing at Valley Children’s Hospital on Tuesday, bringing flight gear and big smiles to patients.
Five fighter pilots spent the afternoon in the hospital’s Child Life Playroom, a vibrant space where children can enjoy games, movies, books, and creative activities. Their visit was more than just a meet-and-greet – it was an immersive experience.
“The fighter squadron has a special appreciation for Valley Children’s Hospital, and we wanted to do something special for patients that are being treated there,” said Lt. Col. James “Huck” Hastings, 194th Fighter Squadron commander. “We are happy to be able to spread some cheer for these kids as they face some very serious medical conditions, and we hope in a small way that we were able to lift their spirits and help with their recovery.”
The team brought along authentic flight gear, including a flight helmet, harness, g-suit and a survival kit, giving the children a hands-on look at what it takes to be a fighter pilot. Kids lit up with excitement as they tried on the gear.
Beyond the gear, the pilots shared stories about their lives in the air, answered every question with enthusiasm, and joined in on games and crafts. Their presence brought joy, inspiration and a welcome distraction for the young patients and their families.
“We are very proud to be able to give back to the community when we can,” said Col. Hastings. “Seeing the look on the kids’ faces was such a rewarding experience for us.”
Patients also received their very own aviation patches from the pilots.
The 144th Fighter Wing is a unit of the California Air National Guard stationed in Fresno.
