Pro Soccer Player Max Arfsten Brings Gifts and Encouragement to Patients

MADERA, Calif. – Fresno native and professional soccer player Max Arfsten made a trip to Valley Children’s Hospital this week, visiting young patients and delivering toys during the holiday season.

Arfsten, a wing back for the Columbus Crew and a member of the U.S. national team, brought signed soccer balls, Nerf toys, Hot Wheels and other gifts while spending time with children in the oncology unit.

He said the visit was a meaningful way to give back to the community that shaped him.

“I wanted to come out to use my platform for something good, and to just make a positive impact on these kids and give them something to smile about,” Arfsten said during the visit.

Arfsten was born and raised in Fresno and attended San Joaquin Memorial High School. He said he remembers coming to Valley Children’s to visit friends when he was younger, but this was his first visit as a professional athlete.

Connecting with young patients – many of whom are facing difficult medical journeys – was the most rewarding part of the day, Arfsten said.

“This community built me and got me to where I am today, so I just want to give back anyway that I can,” he said.

Arfsten spent time talking with families, posing for photos and signing memorabilia. He said he hopes his visit encourages young athletes and brings visibility to the resiliency of kids in the Central Valley.

“One thing I believe about the Valley is that there’s a lot to offer here. Any time I can shed light on my community, it’s a rewarding feeling,” he said.
